英文学科公開講座３

　佐倉セミナーハウスで開催の英文学科公開講座の内容を紹介致します。９月１６日の前半は、映画Peter Pan（ピーター・パン）を題材に講義を行う予定です。以下にテキストを公開します。


映画PETER PANと原作Peter and Wendy


　映画『ピーター・パン』（２００４年、アメリカ、監督Ｐ・Ｊ・ホーガン）では、原作のストーリーや設定等を大胆に改変して、新規の物語世界を創り出している。このお話の中心となっているのは、ピーターではなくて、むしろウェンディの方なのである。しかしながらこの映画は、原作にあった興味深い台詞や会話を活かして巧みにシーンを再構成してもいる。原作の『ピーターとウェンディ』にあった台詞と映画『ピーター・パン』の台詞との対照を通して、この映画のフィクションとしての興味深い特徴を形作る微妙な部分を見直してみることにしよう。

“ずっと恐ろしいものがあるわ。お薬よ。これ以上ないという程の、ぞっとするような味よ。べっとりとして、甘ったるいの。”

Chapter 2: p. 23
Mr. Darling: "It's most beastly stuff. It's that nasty, sticky, sweet kind."

　同様の台詞が、原作と映画では全く異なった場面で、しかも異なった人物によって語られている。原作では物語の冒頭あたりで、自分の子供達と幼稚な口喧嘩をするダーリング氏の語る台詞であった。子供達と一緒にひどい味のする薬を飲むのが嫌で、お父さんが言い訳として語った言葉である。映画では、ピーターと夫婦の役割を共に演じるウェンディが、子供達にお仕置きをする時の脅しの言葉としてこの台詞を語っている。ピーターの行動の一部がウェンディに受け渡されているのである。

　映画『ピーター・パン』では、ピーターの台詞として以下のような言葉が語られている。

“これはただの「ごっこ遊び」だよね？”

原作では、同様の台詞がこれとは異なった場面で語られている。

It is only make-believe, isn't it?

原作では、年とった夫婦が子供達に囲まれて平和な家庭生活を送る様を真似るゲームをしている最中に、ピーターが突然ゲームの放棄を行い、ウェンディの気持ちを裏切る。本来ピーターには恋愛感情はあり得ないので、ウェンディは夫婦ごっこの遊びの突然の破棄という形で、ピーターの裏切りを受ける。しかし映画では、ウェンディを中心にストーリーを進めているので、ピーターとウェンディの二人きりで夜空を飛ぶロマンチックな場面が展開され、その最中の身勝手なピーターの裏切り行為として、この言葉が活用されている。

“私は、「血まみれの手のジル」と名乗ってみようかと思ったことがありました。”

　映画『ピーター・パン』で、フック船長に海賊の仲間にならないかと誘われたウェンディーが、海賊になったら名乗ってみたいと思っていた、と語った名前が“血まみれの手のジル”である。この映画のウェンディは行動的で、ピーターの持つ属性のかなりの部分を担っているのである。

　原作ではこの台詞は、ジョンが語った言葉とされていた。

　映画『ピーター・パン』では、ウェンディが海賊達にお話をしてあげて、ネバーランドの海賊のことを物語る。これを聞いた海賊のヌードラーが、

“その海賊達の中にヌードラーという奴がいなかったかい？”と尋ね、“船長、聞きましたかい？俺がお話の中に出て来てますぜ。”と、喜んでいる。
　原作では、ウェンディが地下の子供達の家の中でロスト・ボーイズ達を相手にお話をしてやり、子供達の一人のトゥートゥルズが、自分がお話の中に語られていることを知って喜んでいた。映画ではウェンディの活動範囲は、原作にあったものよりもさらに広がったものとなっている。

映画「ピーター・パン」では、フックが次の台詞を語っている

“さて、未来の姿をのぞいてみることとしよう。”

原作ではこの台詞は、ウェンディが子供達に自分自身の将来の姿をお話する時に語っていた。原作のウェンディは、物語の語り手として重要な役割を果たす存在ではあっても、積極的に活動し冒険に参加する行為者ではなかった。

　映画「ピーター・パン」でフックが語った言葉

A new era begins.
“新しい時代が始まる。”

　この台詞は原作にはなかったものであるが、原作のストーリーの展開を見事に総括するものとなっている。これまで子供達とインディアン達と海賊達の三つ巴の戦いが延々と繰り広げられ、大きな変化を知らなかったネバーランドに決定的な変化がもたらされることを暗示しているからである。この重大な局面をもたらしたのは、運命の女神（モイラ）の名を持ったウェンディ・モイラ・アンジェラ・ダーリングの来訪なのであった。
　ウェンディはピーターの仲間であったロスト・ボーイズ達までも現実の世界に連れ戻してしまうので、この後ネバーランドにはピーター一人切りが取り残されることとなる。

作者ジェームズ・バリとデイビーズ家の人々
　病で床に伏している婦人のもとに４人の子供達が現れ、階下に誘う。そこに待っているのは、「ピーター・パン」の作者ジェームズ・バリである。これからこの小さな館の中で、この有名なお芝居が演じられることになる。４人の男の子達の母親とバリの関係はどのようなものだったのだろう？

　次は、この映画の劇中劇として展開する「ピーター・パン」の世界である。

I won't go to bed, I won't.

Yes. But I know they are all dead now. You see, Wendy. When the first baby laughed for the first time, the laugh broke into a thousand pieces and they all went skipping about. What, Tink, you drank my medicine! It was poisoned. And you drank it to save my life? Tink! Are you dying? Her light is grown faint. If it goes out, that means she is dead. Her voice is so low I can scarcely hear what she is saying. She says she thinks she could get well again if children believe in fairies. Do you believe in fairies? Say quick that you believe. Hook（１９９１年、スティーブン・スティルバーグ監督）

　二人の子供を連れた夫婦が一人の老婦人のもとを訪れる。彼等は一体何者なのだろう。彼等の交わす言葉と語られている名前から推測してみよう。

Peter: It's been a long time.
Moira: Let's have fun, Peter. London's a magical place for children. Well, it was for us.
Peter: It's gotten very expensive. Jack, don't. You could put someone's eye out.　（男の子を叱っている。）
Moira: Maggie, Maggie. Peter, it's number 14.
Peter: Oh, 14.　　（子供達はジャックとマギー、住所は１４番地）
Moira: Okay. Now, what do you say to Granny Wendy? "How do you do?"　　（“ウェンディおばあちゃま”と呼んでいる）

Wendy: You know, when I was young...no other girl held your favor the way I did....I half expected you to alight on the church and forbid my vows on my wedding day. I wore a pink satin sash. But you didn't come.
