The magic introduced in The Last Unicorn, from the perspective of speculation on the implication of archetype and fictionality, suggests the principle mechanism hidden in nature that acts as the governing principle of the universe, in a way similar to the second law of thermodynamics, which is said to govern the diffusion of information beyond the scope of the effects of physical thermodynamics, and also to the ubiquitous deviation cause of Clinamen advocated by Lucretius.

“Synopsis, Storyboards and Synchronicity”, section 3 of “Animated film The Last Unicorn and Synchronicity,” introduces a new source testifying to the production process of the animated film The Last Unicorn, which is very interesting in consideration of the identity of conceptual existence through ontological relationship between the original and derivative works. This is an internal document kept in Topcraft studio as “synopsis” of The Last Unicorn, written in Japanese. Comparing the original novel, synopsis and the completed animated film, we may be able to envision something that reminds of the fictional archetype in “omnium” state, which is full of diversity hidden behind the original work, along with the accidental deviations in differing manifestation modes among numberless possible worlds.

Though it is not commonly acknowledged, The Last Unicorn is not a typical fantasy work. Actually, it quite often goes beyond the norm of the genre in its peculiar attempt of description of the impossible and maintained attitude of denial of the traditional value system generally adopted in most romance. Against those subversive tendencies, the main subject of the work “magic” has to be reconsidered as an attempt for speculative creation in view of metaphysical reassessment of fictionality. The systematic nature of magic that “comes and goes” from and to outer region other than personal domain, and also at the same time improvised by correspondence between the subjects of consciousness must be considered in comparison with cosmological theories that have deep bearing with consciousness such as David Bohm’s implicate order and Jack Sarfatti’s information theory of retro causality, arguing the nature of its notion implying the existence of cosmic evolutionary law, in a way similar to ones such as clinamen, entropy and providence.
