episode 16 main
Completion and closing of production work.
Suruga is sketching Oedo Onsen Monogatari.

Oedo Onsen Monogatari Urayasu Mangekyo is located in Urayasu.

“You look like you’ve already made yourself at home.”
“I’m glad I begged them to have a send-off party for Chamber Festival!”
“Where’s everyone else?”
“They just finished their work and are going to join us now. That’s what I heard.”
“They said Hoshikawa is coming too.”
“How about going in first? I think Meteora is going to arrive while we’re in.”

“Oh, my shoulders hurt.”
“Let’s get a massage later. They do massages here.”
“You guys are so old.”
“Who are you calling old?”
This sub is a very nice example of free translation. It skillfully integrates the conversation flow.
Above line may be translated literally, “I am no other than an old man.”
Instead, the sub makes good use of an ironic expression.

There is a divergence between the meaning of the word itself and its customary usages. Very often the awareness of this fact is forgotten, and words are chosen in unawareness. This wording of unawareness is found in exam papers very often. One is forced to lose one’s awareness by the exam system. Education actually damages the ability of reflection by forcing the students to easily answer the “correct solution” without considering the connotation of the wording.
Matsubara defiantly avows that he is an old man.
Japan is a country with a male-degrading culture in which men lose their value as human beings when they reach their mid-20s, and are called “Ojisan”, contemptuously.
How do you express this feeling in English? Can it be translated into the American culture that believes in what it means to grow up and become an adult?

This must the “service episode” sometimes prepared for the viewers’s pleasure. But instead of the scene girls are bathing, Ojisans’ bathing scene is introduced wryly in advance.
“Finally. We’re not done yet, but we’ve reached a point where I think things are going to be okay.”
“Yeah. The announcement has been begun.”
“We’re going to have a premier party. Right?”
“Yeah, we’ll have one. Kukuchihara said that preparations are going smoothly.”
Rui asks, “Premier party?”
“It’s for building excitement and increasing the audience’s acceptance before the main show starts.”
They are taking care to gain acceptance of the viewers.
